Program Overview
The Hokusei program offers students in Asian and Japan Studies Concentration the opportunity to study abroad in Japan at a university in Sapporo, the capital of the most northern island of Japan, Hokkaido. The characteristics of the university are very similar to St. Olaf's mission; Christian faith is the base of the institution.  Students may go either for the fall semester, the spring semester or a whole year.

Eligibility
Preference given to Japanese majors. Japanese majors are strongly encouraged to complete Japanese 232 before studying abroad.

Academics
The Hokusei program offers vigorous intensive Japanese language courses and various content courses on Japan taught in English, such as culture, history, sociology, economics, business, management, and journalism/mass media.  Students studying off-campus in the fall can bring up to 4.5 credits back to campus; students studying off-campus in the spring with interim can bring up to 5.5 credits back to campus.

Student Life
Students live in the city of Sapporo, a city with a population of 1.9 million.  Located on the island of Hokkaido, it provides a different cultural experience than mainland Japan.  While at the university, students can take advantage of the International Lounge and enjoy the beautiful lilac trees on campus.
