Botswana header
While rich with cultural, linguistic, and political diversity, African nations grapple with the challenges of economic development and globalization. The nation of Botswana, in southern Africa, is illustrative of both this diversity and of successful approaches to these challenges.

Botswana photoThe country boasts one of the most dynamic economies on the continent and the government has developed substantial initiatives for confronting and managing issues such as rural-to-urban migration, poverty, and high rates of HIV/AIDS infection.

On the ACM Botswana: Development in Southern Africa program, you'll live and learn alongside local students at the University of Botswana (UB) in Gaborone, the nation’s capital.

You will take courses at UB and pursue an independent project in your area of interest, and also have opportunities to volunteer with local community organizations. The program's numerous field trips range from a weekend in Johannesburg, South Africa to a safari, a homestay in a rural village, and a visit to a diamond mine.

Courses
  • Setswana Language: Study of the fundamentals of the national language of Botswana with local instructors.
  • Elective Course(s): Select one or two courses offered by UB faculty.
  • Program Director’s Course: Taught by the ACM Program Director, topics vary and focus on Africa and development.
  • Independent Study Project: Engage in a project under the supervision of the ACM Program Director.
