IMFORMATION TO HELP YOU PLAN:

1.   BE FLEXIBLE in your course planning. Think about the general areas in which you want credit and then identify several       possible alternatives for specific courses (the one you want most may not end up being available).

  • Remember that in order to graduate you need 18 course credits above level I and at least 21 credits in departments outside your major.
  • Beware of 2 Credit courses. These cannot satisfy a major or a general requirement unless appropriately paired with some other course.

2.   ELECTIVE CREDIT. Any course in the Lancaster catalog is eligible to count toward your 35 course St. Olaf graduation requirement. Certification for General Education or Major Credit requires specific approval as described below.

3.   GENERAL EDUCATION CORE-COURSE CREDIT.

APPROVAL IS BY THE ST. OLAF PROGRAM ADVISER OF THE LANCASTER PROGRAM.

  • Foundation Courses should all be taken at St. Olaf.
  • The most readily-satisfied core-course requirements at Lancaster include: Historical Studies in Western Culture (HWC), Artistic and Literary Studies (ALS-A and ALS-L), Human Behavior and Society (HBS) and Theological Studies (BST-T).
  • Plan on doing SPM's, WRI's, ORC, EIN, at St. Olaf
  • Note that some departments at Lancaster may require prior work in their field in order to admit you to courses.
  •  A course must be worth at least 3 Lancaster credits to be eligible for St. Olaf GE credit.
  • The maximum number of GE credits obtainable depends on your length of stay at Lancaster
  • Be aware that at least one each of your HWC and HBS courses must be taken on-campus (or from a St. Olaf instructor off-campus).
  • Consult with the program adviser for pre-approval of specific courses.  GE courses may also count in the major if the department chair approves.

4.   MAJOR CREDIT

APPROVAL TO COUNT COURSES TOWARD MAJOR IS BY DEPARTMENT CHAIRS.

  •  Discuss with your major department chair any plans you have about courses that you want to count toward your major.
  •  Keep an e-mail approval or signed agreement with the department chair about major credit.

5.   PORTFOLIO OF WORK.

Scan and send yourself any handwritten papers or save electronically, to protect yourself from the possibility of a paper getting lost. Bring catalogs, syllabi and reading back to campus in the event these are needed in evaluation for approval of course credit.

6.   GENERAL ADVICE to consider:

  •  Try to avoid taking first year courses if at all possible, even if your adviser is recommending them to you. Very few of these will transfer as level II, and classroom climate generally improves with years (as British students get closer to their "day of reckoning").
  • Be aware that there tend to be many American students taking British Literature courses (esp. Shakespeare, Victorian Lit., etc.)
  •  Consider American History for an interesting perspective on your own country. You will be a resource to the class and learn something in the process.
  • Look at course offerings in disciplines we don't teach at St. Olaf.  These will transfer as general elective credit.

CREDIT TRANSFER PROCESS:

  •           Lancaster sends transcript to International Studies Office.
  •           IOS sends you a e-mail outlining what GE’s you automatically have received.
  •           You respond with OK to process or that you will talk with program adviser to have other GE’s approved.
  •           If new GE is approved, program adviser sends OK to Helene MacCallum in IOS.
  •            Talk with department chair for approvals of major credit.
  •             Classes and the grades appear on transcript.
  •             Grades not included in calculation of St. Olaf GPA.

These notes are intended to be a source of helpful information but do not claim to cover every possible situation you might encounter.
